More Americans admit to same-sex encounters

kissing menThe times they are a-changing.

The General Social Survey has revealed that the number of US citiizens who have had a same-sex encounter has almost doubled in the last 24 years.

Men rose from 4.5% in 1990 to 8.2% in 2014 and women 3.6% to 8.7% over the same period.

The research was published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour, and looked at survey data from almost 30,000 people between 1973 and 2014.

"What we’re seeing is this movement toward more sexual freedom," explained study author Jean Twenge. "There’s more freedom for people to do what they want without following the traditional -- often now seen as outdated -- social rules about who you’re supposed to have sex with and when.”

She added: "Overall, it suggests that our sexuality has become much more free and open, that Americans feel much more freedom to express themselves sexually in a way that they see fit."

The highest increases in same-sex experiences took place in the Midwest and South.

Something tells us that the religious right won't be very happy about this news.
