Study claims PrEP is as safe as aspirin

PrEPTruvada proponents will certainly be trumpeting the release of a new study, which says that taking pre-exposure propyhlaxis (PrEP) for the prevention of HIV may be as safe as taking a daily aspirin.

The study was published in the Oxford Journal's Open Forum on Infectious Diseases. The findings came from researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles. They compared five major studies on PrEP for HIV infection and two major studies on aspirin safety.

The article - "Is Emtricitabine-Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for the Prevention of HIV Infection Safer than Aspirin?" (say that when you're drunk) - concluded:
...PrEP for HIV infection favorably compares to aspirin in terms of user safety. While long-term studies are needed, providers should feel reassured about the safety of short- and medium-term PrEP for HIV infection with FTC-TDF.
Of course, there are possible side effects from taking Truvada. People have complained about nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and dizziness. The researchers said long-term effects still need to be studied.

Don't give up on condoms just yet, because PrEP won't protect you from things like chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhea, or even bacterial vaginosis. (Although that last one is probably not something most of our readers will ever have to deal with).
