One might think that fleeing a warzone would be enough for people to leave their homophobic ways on the back burner; sadly, for Syrian refugees in the Netherlands, this is not the case.
A few gay refugees who were being held at an asylum center in Amsterdam have been moved because of homophobic attacks by other residents. According to reports, several gay men were spit on, called names and threatened.
Five gay men have already been moved to a new location after the Salvation Army, which runs the shelter, said it could not ensure the men's safety.
Local officials have promised to create a separate wing in a refugee center for LGBT asylum seekers sometime in early 2016.
"LGBTs are extra vulnerable and I consider it crucial that they have a safe environment to recover and receive care," city alderman Simone Kukenheim said.
Junior justice minister Klaas Dijkhoff, however, doesn't agree with the plan. He feared the move would further stigmatize members of the gay community.
Maybe the abusive homophobes could get a one way ticket back home. Just a thought.
