Andy Bell releases album, “Torsten the Bareback Saint”

Andy Bell, “Torsten the Bareback Saint”

Andy Bell, the lead singer of the Erasure, is back with a new album, with lyrics written by Barney Ashton and music composed by Christopher Frost and Simon Bayliss.

In Torsten The Bareback Saint, Andy sings in character as an age-defying polysexual. He will be performing live as a one man show at the Edinburgh Festival from August 5-16.

Torsten is a Dorian Gray-esque character. He's had many lovers, male and female, but as time passes he must suffer as they abandon him and die.

Bell called the album and play "the biggest challenge of my career so far.”

"You feel naked," Bell explained. "There are no bells and whistles, and it’s not your own songs. When I’m doing Erasure, I’m in my comfort zone. This is something completely different. I don’t think people are going to be offended but there’s quite a lot of swearing and visceral lyrics. It’s quite rude but I’m really enjoying it because I’ve got a clean-cut image."

As for the character of Torsten, Bell said: "He’s very vulnerable but he has this armour as well. I don’t see him as a victim at all. To me, it feels like you are reading through Torsten’s diary and each song is a certain period when he’s written down what he’s going through at that time. He seems to be a bit like Doctor Who where he can just travel wherever he wants to."
