Jimmy Somerville re-records "Smalltown Boy"

Thirty years ago, "Smalltown Boy" by the British group Bronski Beat was released on the band's debut album The Age of Consent.

The song quickly became a popular gay anthem and was even a commercial success, cracking the top 10 in the UK, Australia, Canada and France. It hit number 1 in the US dance charts, but only reached number 48 in the US pop chart.

The official video for the song didn't shy away from the gay theme, following Jimmy Somerville as the boy who is forced to leave his parents' home to hide his sexuality. He is later attacked by a homophobic gang in an alley, taken home by police and finds some support from his mother but not his father.

Not bad in a time when there were very few out performers (even George Michael was still in the closet).

Somerville recently reprised the single in a new recording. This guy has a voice that just won't quit!
