Is Chik-fil-A changing its tune about gay rights? Maybe.

Well, it looks like Mike Huckabee and the anti-gay crew might be reconsidering their boisterous support for Chik-fil-A. You might recall that Huckabee planned a successful Chik-fil-A Appreciation Day after the restaurant's CEO, Dan Cathy, said he didn't support same-sex marriage but would continue to give money to traditional marriage advocates. Word came out yesterday that the chain is reconsidering its donation policy and will no longer support any organization with a political agenda. That means no more free meals for homophobic groups.

Chicago Alderman Moreno worked with the company on a real estate deal within his city and explained that part of the agreement required that Chik-fil-A stop helping groups opposed to gay rights.

"My sole interest in this fight was to make substantive progress on the vital civil rights issue of our day. With this action, I believe that real progress has been made to address the very legitimate concerns of the LGBT community regarding Chick-fil-A. Moreover, the company has agreed to a compromised traffic pattern," Moreno explained.

The Civil Rights Agenda released a statement which included parts of a letter from the company to the alderman. "[Chik-fil-A's] WinShape Foundations is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas," the letter stated.

"I think the most substantive part of this outcome is that Chick-fil-A has ceased donating to organizations that promote discrimination, specifically against LGBT civil rights," said Anthony Martinez, executive director of The Civil Rights Agenda.

But don't be too quick to run out for a chicken sandwich and waffle fries. The official word from the company hasn't really changed.

"[We are a] family-owned and family-led company serving the communities in which it operates. From the day Truett Cathy started the company, he began applying biblically-based principles to managing his business,' it explained in its own release, neither confirming nor denying any change in policy. "The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect –regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. ... Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena."

A similar promise was made on the company's Facebook page just days before Cathy expressed his support for groups like the National Organization for Marriage and the Family Research Council. We'll have to wait and see if there really has been a real change in policy.
