Move over Russia ... Haiti hates the gays, too

HaitiEarlier this week, Haiti proved that Russia is not the only country run by bigoted pricks. The Haitian Senate voted to ban same-sex marriages and made even trying to have one a punishable offence.

If you attempt to get married to a partner of the same sex, or if you show up in support of said union, you face up to three years in jail and fines of several thousand dollars.

And like Russia, Haiti has also made it illegal for “any public demonstration of support for homosexuality and proselytizing in favour of such acts.”

The law still has to be debated in the Chamber of Deputies, but it is expected to pass easily.

"... all senators are opposed to same-sex marriage, so this simply reflects the commitments the senators made during their campaigns," President of the Senate, Youri Latortue, said. “A country has to focus on its values and traditions. Some people in other countries see it differently, but in Haiti, that’s how it’s seen.”

He admitted his country was a secular one, but said people of faith were in the majority. He also claimed that homosexuality was a Western creation.

“We see this as an attack on the LGBT community in this country. This text divides our society, it reinforces prejudices and discrimination. It’s really a shame,” said Charlot Jeudy of the Kouraj Group, one of two LGBT organizations in the country. "[Politicians] know very well that this will bring much more violence and prejudice against the LGBTI community.”

They're really trying to put the "hate" in Haiti.
