What the heck are you listening to?

Gay music

Yes, June is officially Pride Month and we thought we'd help you queer up your playlist with some new tunes by LGBT-identified artists. From gay to lesbian to bi to trans to bear, we covered the bases to make sure you had a good mix from which to choose!

"There For You" - Martin Garrix featuring Troye Sivan

Troye Sivan is one of the most successful young queer singers today. The South-African born Aussie, only 21-years-old, just won GLAAD's Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which is given to an LGBT media professional who has made a meaningful difference in promoting both equality and acceptance.

"This award is so much larger than me," Sivan said during his acceptance speech. "This moment is about visibility and about representation. What and who we see in the media defines our perception of the world around us, and so to see ourselves in this picture of what is ‘normal’ and what is acceptable and what is beautiful is absolutely vital. In saying that, so much of the work that has contributed to our progress as a community is far less glamorous than the work that I’m being honored for tonight."

He teamed up with another 21-year-old, Dutch DJ Martin Garrix, for this EDM offering ...

"LaCroix Boi" - Big Dipper

Big Dipper is a queer hip-hop artist who really likes flavored water. He even wrote a song about it!

“I’m obsessed with LaCroix and I love experimenting with music genres…so it just seemed right…” offered Big Dipper. He added that the sound is a departure from his earlier work, as "the vibe is less ‘party’ and more like ‘baby-makin music’.”

Now, this won't be to everyone's taste, but give it a chance as it may grow on some of you!

“Know Your Name” - Mary Lambert

Mary Lambert is probably best known for appearing on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' hit queer-rights track, "Same Love." She worked her portion of the song into her own single called "She Keeps Me Warm."

The singer has been open about her struggles with bipolar disorder, but wonders why more people don't suffer from some form of mental illness.

“I think it’s weird when someone doesn’t have mental illness or strange way of coping with the world,” she admitted. “Because we’re living in a climate and culture that is literally bananas. If you don’t suffer from something, what aren’t you seeing, where are you, how are you coping with what you are seeing?”

Although much of her music has been described as sad, her latest single is anything but ...

"Nightwork" - TAYLOR ALXNDR

Drag queen TAYLOR ALXNDR decided to explore the darker side of drag in her new album NOISE (this girl likes her caps!). Life in a wig and fancy dress is not all glitter and glam, she pointed out.

"Sometimes you leave the show feeling empty, even with a purse full of tips," she said.

"NOISE is a soundtrack to the experiences of my life," ALXNDR added. "As a queer and trans person of color trying to live and thrive in this world, you get used to the 'noise' or dissonance that comes with existing. From the noise of being a drag queen to the noise of being a part of the Black Trans Lives Matter movement, this EP captures the struggle and the success of my living. It's a love letter to the communities I'm a part of that, despite the powers that be, still thrive."

"Strangers" - Halsey and Lauren Jauregui

“Strangers” is the third single off Halsey’s new album, hopeless fountain kingdom. The 22-year-old singer teamed up with Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui for a song about same-sex relationships. Both women have come out as bisexual.

“I just love that Lauren and I are two women who have a mainstream pop presence doing a love song for the LGBT community,” Halsey said. “It’s unheard of. It’s very rare to see it from a female perspective.”
