Starship okays anti-gay Chik-Fil-A's use of song

Grace SlickA new set of Chik-Fil-A ads feature the song “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” by Starship. That may seem like no big deal, until you remember that the company has a history of supporting anti-gay organizations.

So why would a cool chick like Starship lead singer Grace Slick allow a company with a bigoted background use the group's hit single? She felt it was a great way to take the company's money and actually use it for some good.

She wrote an article for Forbes explaining her decision, and revealed the full amount she was paid was donated to Lambda Legal, a group dedicated to protecting the rights of LGBT people and those living with HIV.

"Chick-fil-A pisses me off," she wrote. "The Georgia-based company has a well-documented history of funding organizations ... that are against gay marriage. I firmly believe that men should be able to marry men, and women women. I am passionately against anyone who would try to suppress this basic human right. So my first thought when 'Check'-fil-A came to me was, 'Fuck no!' But then I decided, 'Fuck yes.'"

Slick said that what she was paid does not match the millions the company has given to anti-gay groups, but she said this was a perfect opportunity to “spend the cash in direct opposition” to the company’s awful beliefs.

"Instead of [Chick-fil-A] replacing my song with someone else's and losing this opportunity to strike back at anti-LGBTQ forces, I decided to spend the cash in direct opposition to 'Check'-fil-A’s causes – and to make a public example of them, too," Slick wrote. "We're going to take some of their money, and pay it back."

"It’s not only great fun but also a great honor to be part of Grace Slick’s plan to undermine Chick-fil-A’s anti-LGBT spending by re-routing their money to us," Lisa Hardaway, Deputy Director of Education and Public Affairs at Lambda Legal said. "And just as important as the dollars is the way in which Grace made a public example out of the company’s homophobic actions. Nothing’s gonna stop us now!"

Fabulous.
