Darren Criss will play Gianni Versace's killer in new mini-series

Darren CrissDarren Criss is taking on a decidedly different role than the one that made him a household name. Say goodbye to the Glee cutie known for breaking out into song and say hello to  Andrew Cunanan, the man who murdered fashion designer Gianni Versace.

The actor -- who we thought was gay but is actually straight -- will be playing the serial killer in Versace: American Crime Story, the third installment in Ryan Murphy’s anthology series for FX.

Edgar Ramirez will portray Versace.

The series focuses on famous crime stories. In the first instalment, Murphy won raves for his examination of the OJ Simpson trial.

In the Versace series, Murphy will revisit the death of the designer on the front steps of his mansion in Miami Beach in 1997. It will also look at the four other people who were victims of  Cunanan’s nationwide killing spree.

Cunanan later killed himself while on the run from police.

Criss seems up for the challenge. Yes, he starred as the boyfriend of Chris Colfer’s Kurt Hummel in Glee, but he also played the title role of a transgender rocker in the Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

There is currently no date for the release of the series, but we probably won't see killer Criss until 2018.
