South Carolina wants to block your porn ... unless you pay up

No pornIf you live in South Carolina, your porn viewing days may be numbered. A new bill is being pushed that would require any new computers and smart phones sold in the state to come with porn-blocking technology.

State Rep. Bill Chumley is behind the bill, and he wants all new electronic devices to prevent the viewing of obscene content. He also wants to ban any website that can be used to promote prostitution.

"If we could have manufacturers install filters that would be shipped to South Carolina, then anything that children have access on for pornography would be blocked," Chumley argued. "We felt like that would be another way to fight human trafficking."

Of course, such a bill is totally uneforceable. Consumers can pick up a computer in any other state, and hackers will provide ways to get around such blockers within hours of any new technological release.

In reality, the proposed law is about money. Sellers and buyers can pay a $20 fee per device to opt out of any porn blocking filters. The money has been earmarked for the Attorney General's Office's human trafficking task force.

The chances this will ever pass are slim indeed. But don't worry about Chumley, as he's a pro when it comes to losing. Some of his other failed initiatives include a bill to let people carry weapons into college athletic events, and a request to designate March 26th as “South Carolina Independence Day.”
